Team India’s ODI and Test skipper Shubman Gill was spotted at the airport on December 1, Monday, heading to the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. Notably, the 26-year-old was no longer wearing the neck brace he had previously used after suffering a neck spasm during the first Test against South Africa last month.
Gill hasn’t featured in competitive cricket since Day 2 of the opening Test at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, where he developed a neck spasm after facing just three balls and had to retire hurt. He was taken to a private hospital for treatment and discharged a couple of days later.
However, the setback ruled him out of the second and final Test in Guwahati, with Rishabh Pant stepping in as captain. Gill was later released from the squad and travelled to Mumbai for specialist consultations regarding the injury. You can watch the video here:

Cricbuzz reported that there’s over a 50% chance the CoE will give Gill the green light to return to international cricket. A source added that the opener is likely to feature in the upcoming T20I series against South Africa, stating:
“The captain has put in a lot of hard work during the rehab process. It is up to the CoE now. If everything goes according to plan, he should be in Cuttack by December 6-7, when the T20I squad is expected to assemble.”
KL Rahul Named India Captain For South Africa ODIs After Gill, Iyer Injuries
With Shubman Gill sidelined due to a neck spasm and ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer still recovering from a spleen injury sustained while fielding during the Australia series, the selectors handed the captaincy for India’s upcoming 50-over leg against South Africa to KL Rahul.
In the first ODI at Ranchi on November 30, India secured a 17-run win in a high-scoring encounter. Virat Kohli’s 135 off 120 balls anchored India’s total of 349/8, while Kuldeep Yadav and Harshit Rana shared seven wickets to help restrict the visitors.
