Australia’s stand-in captain Steve Smith burst into laughter when former cricketer Michael Atherton asked about Josh Inglis’ British passport following his stunning knock against England in the 2025 Champions Trophy. Smith admitted he wasn’t sure if Inglis still held a British passport but assured that the Leeds-born cricketer was staying put.
Inglis smashed his maiden ODI century on February 22 at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, guiding Australia to a record chase of 352 with 15 balls and five wickets to spare. The 29-year-old reached his century with a pulled six off Jofra Archer before embracing Glenn Maxwell in celebration. He then sealed the win with another six, finishing unbeaten on 120.
In a video shared by the ICC on Instagram, Michael Atherton quizzed Steve Smith about Josh Inglis’ passport, to which the skipper responded with a laugh:
“I don’t know if Josh still has an English passport. But he’s not going anywhere!”

“We knew the dew was in our favor during the chase” – Josh Inglis
In the post-match press conference, the right-handed batter mentioned that they were confident dew would set in, as it had during their recent training sessions. He believes this made batting considerably easier and stated (as quoted by Cricbuzz):
“I think 350 is a big total in any one-day game. But we sort of knew, we trained here at night for the last couple of days and it got really dewy around 7.30 – 8 o’clock.”
”So, we sort of knew that was in our favor during the run chase and if we could take it deep enough it would be tough for the bowlers at the back end. It made life easier for us, the wicket skidded on beautifully and it really helped our run chase.”
Australia’s next challenge will be against a formidable South African team in Rawalpindi on Tuesday.
