The Indian team batter, Tilak Varma offered a positive update on his road back to fitness by sharing an Instagram post on Friday, January 30. One of the videos showed him stepping out confidently to a fast bowler and driving the ball straight down the ground for a boundary, reflecting growing confidence during his recovery phase. The visuals suggested that his timing and movement are gradually returning as he continues structured training.
Initially included in the squad for the ongoing five-match T20I series against New Zealand, the left-hander was later ruled out of the first three matches after undergoing abdominal surgery in Rajkot on Wednesday, January 7. The development was officially communicated by the board on January 8, following which the focus shifted entirely towards rehabilitation and long-term readiness rather than a rushed return.

Medical Update And Return Timeline
On January 26, the board released an official statement regarding his progress, stating: “Tilak Varma has resumed physical training and is making steady progress with his rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence. However, he will require additional time to regain full match fitness and will not be available for the final two T20Is of the ongoing IDFC First Bank five-match T20I series.”
The update made it clear that caution was being prioritised to ensure a complete recovery. The statement further added: “Tilak will link up with the squad in Mumbai once he has regained full match fitness on 3rd February, ahead of India’s warm-up match for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.” This confirmed that although he would miss the remainder of the bilateral series, his return was being aligned with preparations for the upcoming global tournament.
Form, Rankings, And World Cup Context
On January 30, he followed up the medical update by posting fresh photos and videos on Instagram, showing himself both batting and bowling as part of his rehabilitation routine. These visuals underlined his commitment to regaining peak condition ahead of major assignments. The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, is scheduled to begin on February 7, adding significance to his recovery timeline.
Since making his T20I debut against the West Indies in August 2023, the Hyderabad batter has played 40 matches in the format. He has scored 1,183 runs in 37 innings at an impressive average of 49.29 and a strike rate of 144.09, including six half-centuries and two centuries, with a highest unbeaten score of 120. His consistency has placed him at No. 3 in the men’s T20I batting rankings, with Abhishek Sharma at the top spot and England’s Phil Salt occupying second place.
