In the second innings of the opening Test between India and England at Headingley, Yashasvi Jaiswal found himself under intense scrutiny for his poor fielding performance. The young Indian opener dropped as many as four catches during England’s successful fourth-innings chase of 371 runs — the most by any player in a single innings in the match.
Among the missed opportunities was a key chance to dismiss Ben Duckett early, who later went on to score a match-defining 149. These lapses proved costly as England chased down the target comfortably, putting the Indian fielding unit, particularly Jaiswal, in a negative spotlight.
Dance Video Adds Fuel to Fan Criticism
What further fueled the backlash was a video that emerged on social media shortly after the dropped catches. In the clip, Jaiswal was seen smiling and dancing in front of a group of England supporters, seemingly unbothered by his errors. The video quickly went viral, triggering a wave of online criticism.

Many fans expressed their anger and disappointment, questioning his seriousness and sense of responsibility during such a crucial phase of the match. Comments ranged from sarcastic jabs to outright frustration, with people pointing out the contrast between his on-field mistakes and off-field behavior.
Ashwin Comes to Jaiswal’s Defense
Amid the criticism, Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin came out in support of the young cricketer. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin explained the challenges of fielding with a Duke ball in English conditions. He noted that the Duke ball is heavier and bounces differently compared to the SG or Kookaburra balls used in India and other parts of the world.
Ashwin emphasized that adapting to such changes takes time, especially for players unfamiliar with these conditions. He also reminded fans that Jaiswal has previously shown promise as a slip fielder and should be given the space to learn and improve.
Despite the mistakes, Ashwin’s support highlights the importance of patience and understanding towards young talent. While Jaiswal’s actions may have appeared light-hearted, it’s crucial to view them in context and not let one poor performance define a player’s character or potential.
