Brisbane Heat, led by Jess Jonassen, faced a five-run penalty against Ellyse Perry’s Sydney Sixers in their Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) match at Allan Border Field on Tuesday, November 21.
During the 10th over of the Sixers’ run chase, Amelia Kerr attempted to use a hand towel to dry and shine the ball. However, she neglected to collect the ball with the towel, prompting the on-field umpires to penalize her side with five runs.
The penalty was given in accordance with Law 42 of Players’ Conduct as per the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), Lord’s.
For those unfamiliar, hand towels are used to dry the ball. The signal for a five-run penalty is made by crossing one arm across the chest and touching the shoulder.
