A West Indian cricketer has allegedly been accused of sexual assault in Guyana during the team’s ongoing three-match Test series against Australia. A 24-year-old woman claimed the incident occurred following a date with the player. As reported by the Guyana-based publication Kaieteur News, the alleged assault took place near the woman’s home in Providence, East Bank Demerara.
The woman reportedly shared WhatsApp messages with the outlet, in which the cricketer appeared to apologize and allegedly offered her money in return. SportsMax TV reported multiple women have made similar allegations, claiming a cover-up to protect the player. The channel asked CWI President Kishore Shallow if the board was aware and had launched any probe.
In response, Shallow issued a statement on the issue:
“Cricket West Indies is unaware of the circumstances and, therefore, is not in a position to comment at this time.”
Meanwhile, Nigel Hughes, the attorney representing one of the alleged victims, spoke about the case during an appearance on SportsMax TV.
“It is a matter of some significant sensitivity. The allegations that were leveled by the victims were leveled two years ago. An investigation was conducted, and we understand that there were recommendations from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to institute charges.”
”You will recall the very famous Test match, which the West Indies won in Australia, occurred at the same time, and the suspect returned together and we have heard nothing since.”
“My firm was initially contacted about two years ago, and with the more recent allegation, inquiries were made yesterday and the day before about what the status of my client’s complaint was, and we have not been able to obtain any significant information.”
“I want justice for my daughter”- Mother of alleged victim in WI cricketer case
A separate report from Kaieteur News disclosed that another alleged victim, an 18-year-old woman, has also accused the same West Indian cricketer of sexual assault. According to the girl’s mother, the player approached her daughter under the guise of social interaction.
She alleged that he took her to a house, forcibly removed her clothes, and assaulted her. The mother shared these claims with the newspaper, which quoted her account of the incident.
“She called me and said, ‘Mom, I’m going out with (name provided), I’ll be home by a certain time.’ He took her to a house in (area provided) where several men were seen hanging out in the yard. She said after seeing other people there, she felt safe.”
”But then he asked her to come upstairs to get something. That’s when it happened. He ripped off her pants, held her down, and did what he wanted. My child has not been the same since. She’s been broken ever since that day.”
“Let it be known, we didn’t take any money. We don’t want money. I want justice for what he did to my daughter.”
