Devajit Saikia, a native of Assam, has carved an impressive path through cricket, law, and administration. Now serving as the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Saikia takes over from Jay Shah, who has assumed the role of ICC chairman.
Although Saikia’s cricketing career was brief, it showcased his early passion for the sport. As a wicketkeeper-batsman, he played four first-class matches for Assam between 1990 and 1991, scoring 53 runs at an average of 8.83, with a top score of 54.
He also recorded eight catches and one stumping. Limited opportunities in cricket eventually led him to excel in other fields.
When Saikia pursued a career in law
After his cricket career, Saikia built a successful legal profession. At 28, he started practicing law at the Gauhati High Court. Through sports quotas, he also worked with Northern Frontier Railways and the Reserve Bank of India, demonstrating his versatility. His expertise and commitment ultimately led to his appointment as Advocate General and Chief Legal Adviser to the Government of Assam under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Saikia ventured into cricket administration in 2016, when he became one of the vice presidents of the Assam Cricket Association (ACA), headed by Sarma. His notable contributions led to his appointment as ACA secretary in 2019, further cementing his reputation as a skilled administrator.
BCCI Appoints New Secretary
Saikia’s first task as the new BCCI Secretary was to attend a meeting with BCCI President Roger Binny, where the focus was on India’s performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. Sources indicated that captain Rohit Sharma and coach Gautam Gambhir were also present to provide their perspectives.
At 55, Saikia brings a vast range of experience to his role. His journey from cricketer to prominent legal advisor and administrator reflects his adaptability and dedication. His appointment makes him the first person from Assam to hold such a prestigious position in Indian cricket, a significant achievement for the state.
With his unique blend of cricketing, legal, and administrative expertise, Saikia is poised for a promising tenure in one of the most influential roles in global cricket.
