India are beginning their ODI campaign against South Africa without Shubman Gill, and his absence will continue through the entire three-match series. Recently named as the ODI captain, the 26-year-old is sidelined because of a neck spasm he suffered during the Kolkata Test of the South Africa series. The injury occurred early in the match, forcing Gill to leave the field after facing only three balls.
He walked back accompanied by the medical staff and did not take any further part in the Test. Following this, he was taken to the hospital for precautionary checks and was later discharged once the Kolkata Test ended. Unfortunately, the discomfort was severe enough to rule him out of the final Test in Guwahati as well, a situation that led to Rishabh Pant taking over the captaincy duties. For the ODI leg, KL Rahul now steps in as captain, while designated vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is also unavailable because of a rib issue.
Update On Gill’s Recovery
Ahead of the opening ODI, bowling coach Morne Morkel shared a positive update about Gill’s health. While speaking to the media, he explained that the medical team was closely monitoring the situation and that Gill seemed to be progressing well. Morkel mentioned that he had personally checked on Gill recently and that the batter was showing steady improvement.
In his words, “He is recovering well”. He further added, as quoted via ESPN Cricinfo: “I think the best is for the medical [team] to give that [update]. I spoke to Shubman two days ago just to check in with him and he is recovering well. So, that is pleasing to hear.” This offers some relief to fans who were hoping to see Gill lead the side in the ODI series.
India’s Focus For The Rest Of The Tour
The ODI series is especially important for India as they attempt to bounce back from a disappointing result in the preceding Test series. South Africa managed a rare clean sweep on Indian soil, their second ever in the country, marking a significant moment since they had waited 25 years for such a triumph. With morale needing a boost, India will view the 50-over format as a chance to regain momentum. After the ODIs, both sides will shift to a three-match T20I series, making this tour a lengthy challenge where India aim to restore pride and rhythm.
