During the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, a noteworthy incident revolved around an intense confrontation involving Virat Kohli, the captain of the Royal Challengers Bangalore, and key members of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) team, particularly their mentor Gautam Gambhir and fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq.
Throughout the course of the match, Kohli’s emotions were clearly on display whenever a batter from the LSG team was dismissed during their pursuit of victory. After the match concluded, a surprising twist occurred when Virat Kohli and Gambhir appeared to mend fences as they exchanged a handshake, giving the impression that normalcy had returned.
However, the situation took an intriguing turn when Kyle Mayers, the opening batsman for LSG, approached Kohli and engaged in a heated verbal exchange with the Royal Challengers Bangalore captain.

Swiftly, Gautam Gambhir intervened and guided Mayers away from the escalating confrontation. Subsequent footage from the match revealed an animated exchange of words between Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli, with Kohli maintaining a relatively composed demeanour in comparison. Recently, Mayers shared his perspective on the ‘banter’ he shared with Kohli during the IPL.
When asked about Virat Kohli’s aggression, Mayers responded, “It’s great. Sometimes you need to rile up your opponents to create opportunities and turn the tide of the game. Displaying aggression is always commendable, as it reflects both bravery and a determination to lead one’s team to victory.”
In the aftermath of the incident, both Virat Kohli and Gambhir faced fines. The IPL administration issued a statement, declaring, “Gautam Gambhir, the Mentor of Lucknow Super Giants, has been penalized 100% of his match fee for violating the IPL Code of Conduct during the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 match against the Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.”
Gambhir acknowledged his infraction, admitting to a Level 2 offence under Article 2.21 of the IPL Code of Conduct. Furthermore, Virat Kohli, the batting mainstay of the Royal Challengers Bangalore, was fined 100% of his match fee for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during the TATA Indian Premier League 2023 match against the Lucknow Super Giants at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
Kohli confessed to a Level 2 offence under Article 2.21 of the IPL Code of Conduct, as stated in an official IPL press release.
