Team India head coach Rahul Dravid defended Shubman Gill after India’s defeat in the 2nd ODI against West Indies. Gill, recently promoted to India’s No. 3 Test batting position, has faced difficulties during the multi-format tour in the Caribbean. With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli rested for the 2nd ODI, much was expected from Gill as he opened the innings alongside in-form batter Ishan Kishan at the Kensington Oval.
While Ishan Kishan played a quick-fire half-century, adding 90 runs for the first wicket, Gill couldn’t convert his start and scored a patient 34 off 49 balls. Despite his sluggish knock, head coach Dravid stood firmly behind Gill, praising his abilities and downplaying concerns about his recent form.
Before the 3rd ODI against the West Indies, Rahul Dravid silenced Shubman Gill’s critics
In a press conference, Dravid expressed his confidence in Gill, emphasizing that it’s unfair to criticize players after every single game. He acknowledged that challenging batting conditions can lead to fluctuations in performance and stated that Gill remains an integral part of the Indian side in all formats.
Alongside supporting Shubman Gill, Dravid showered praise on Ishan Kishan, who has been in exceptional form for the Men in Blue. Kishan’s consistent performances, including his third consecutive fifty in the series. However, Shubman Gill has an impressive ODI average of 61.45 in 26 matches, having scored 1,352 runs for India since his debut in 2019 against New Zealand at Seddon Park.
Despite the recent struggles, Dravid has confidence in Gill’s abilities and views him as an essential asset to the team’s future success. Looking ahead, India will aim to bounce back from their defeat in the 2nd ODI and secure a victory against West Indies in the third and final match of the bilateral series at the Brian Lara Stadium.
As the team continues their tour, Dravid’s support and encouragement will undoubtedly play a vital role in boosting the players’ morale and performances.
