Yashasvi Jaiswal had always been identified as a player destined for greatness. Even during his under-19 days, Jaiswal’s composure and exceptional talent set him apart from his peers.
He had already demonstrated his skills in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL), which led to his selection for the Test series against West Indies.
The team management’s faith in the 21-year-old prodigy was quickly justified when he played a remarkable innings in the first Test in Dominica, scoring his maiden century in just 215 balls.
At the age of 21 years and 197 days, Jaiswal became the fourth youngest Indian debutant to achieve a Test century. He also became the third Indian opener, following Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan, to achieve this feat on his debut.
Additionally, Jaiswal and his opening partner Rohit Sharma broke the record for the highest opening stand by an Indian pair against West Indies, surpassing the previous record of 201 runs set by Virender Sehwag and Sanjay Bangar during a Test match in Mumbai in 2002, according to news agency PTI.

After a span of 41 years, since India’s tour of England in 1982 where Suru Nayak and Sunil Gavaskar opened the innings, two players from Mumbai were representing the country as openers and set a new record by posting the highest-ever opening partnership of 229 runs against West Indies.
This surpassed the previous record of 201 runs set by Sanjay Bangar and Virender Sehwag in 2001.
Jaiswal joined the elite company of Shikhar Dhawan (against Australia in 2013) and Prithvi Shaw (against West Indies in 2018) as the third Indian opener to score a century on Test debut.
It was a display of classic Test match batting, with both batsmen meticulously grinding out runs against a weary West Indies bowling attack that lacked the firepower to trouble them. Jaiswal reached his hundred off 215 balls, while Rohit took 220 balls to achieve the milestone.
The slow and unresponsive pitch made stroke-making challenging, as most deliveries stopped and came onto the bat.
The Windsor Park pitch presented a difficult challenge for aggressive stroke players like Rohit and Jaiswal, as its slowness intensified throughout the day.
However, once the giant West Indian spinner Rahkeem Cornwall developed a niggle and was unable to bowl effectively (finishing with figures of 0/22 in 11 overs), the sting in the West Indies’ bowling attack disappeared.
Taking advantage of this, the Indian batsmen scored 66 runs in the first session and accelerated to add 99 runs in the second session.
In summary, Yashasvi Jaiswal’s remarkable debut Test century validated the confidence placed in him by the team management. Alongside Rohit Sharma, he formed a formidable opening partnership and broke longstanding records in the process.
Their patient and determined batting helped India dominate the West Indies bowlers on a challenging pitch, and their partnership will be remembered as one of the finest in Indian cricket history.
