Former Chennai Super Kings cricketer Suresh Raina stated that Sanju Samson, the franchise’s latest marquee signing, is likely to have a well-defined role in IPL 2026. He also raised the possibility of Ayush Mhatre shifting to the No. 3 spot to allow Samson to open the batting.
CSK secured Samson from the Rajasthan Royals for ₹18 crore ahead of the IPL 2026 auction. Despite the high-profile move, the former RR captain will not lead the Chennai franchise, as Ruturaj Gaikwad will continue as skipper.
Speaking on Star Sports, Raina was asked about the role Samson might play for CSK in the upcoming season.
“Firstly, he will fill a gap if Dhoni bhai doesn’t play next year. It will be a big name. He brings a brand. He is already from the south. I feel his role will be absolutely clear. Will Sanju Samson and Mhatre open, or will Ruturaj and Mhatre open, or will Ayush Mhatre play at No. 3? We have seen him playing at No. 3 in the Under-19 World Cup,” he responded.
The former India national cricket team all-rounder suggested that Sanju Samson should take the No. 3 spot to bolster Chennai Super Kings’ middle order, especially since MS Dhoni is expected to come in to bat only during the closing overs.
“Sanju, along with keeping, will also help create an atmosphere. We saw how he was welcomed there in the World Cup. As for his role, I feel No. 3 will be more important. Let Ayush Mhatre and Ruturaj play at the top. Then the middle order looks slightly strong because, after that, I feel Dhoni will play the last two or three overs. An experienced player like Sanju needs to be there,” Raina observed.

During the same conversation, Suresh Raina was also questioned about MS Dhoni’s expected role in IPL 2026.
“The helicopter has already landed there. He did very well last year. The youngsters there need mentorship now. Dhoni will tell why this has been a successful franchise. He needs to be there. Ruturaj Gaikwad will lead from the front, but the only thing all youngsters will say is that they want to learn from the best,” he replied.
The cricketer-turned-commentator further stated that, in addition to his keeping and batting duties, MS Dhoni should also guide and mentor the younger players in IPL 2026.
“Dhoni bhai’s role will be very important as a keeper and a batter, but above that, the sarpanch, Dhoni bhai, will be sitting. I feel he will play all the matches. It will depend on the fitness. This year will be more important than the last two or three years. He will define each player’s role. More than MS Dhoni, the youngsters need MS Dhoni more,” Raina observed.
