As Chennai Super Kings (CSK) face the possibility of elimination from IPL 2026, speculation has intensified over whether MS Dhoni will continue in the yellow jersey as a player next season. Dhoni was retained ahead of the tournament as an “uncapped player” and was seen as a mentor figure expected to guide and groom younger talent, but injuries ruled him out of the entire campaign.
With only one league match remaining, Dhoni has neither batted nor taken up wicketkeeping duties this season. When asked about his future, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming remained non-committal, stating that the decision rests with the franchise management.
Stephen Fleming and MS Dhoni have long been constant figures in the CSK dressing room. Fleming first shared the setup with Dhoni as a player during the 2008 season before later becoming the team’s head coach.
Although Dhoni has not featured as a player this season, Fleming emphasized that his experience and presence around the squad have still played a valuable role in guiding and supporting the younger players in the support staff environment.
“It’s a choice for the management. I know there has been a lot of talk about it. MS (Dhoni) has been around a lot this year, which is very important for the team, for young players in continuity, so he’s been a big part. He hasn’t played, but he’s still had a big influence on the team.”
“There’s a lot of good things we’ve done. We’ve introduced some new players that will hopefully be generation players for CSK. But I know we are judged on results, that’s fair. So yeah, that’s a management call, not mine,” he said on the topic.

Dhoni’s CSK Future Sparks Ongoing Debate Amid Absence Speculation
Speculation over MS Dhoni’s playing future has continued throughout the season. While the CSK management has maintained that the wicketkeeper-batter has been sidelined due to injury, several theories have circulated suggesting that he may have stayed out of the XI intentionally to allow younger players more game time.
Ahead of reports of Dhoni potentially being available for the Sunrisers Hyderabad clash on Monday, former India great Sunil Gavaskar remarked that such a move may not be ideal, as CSK would likely prefer to persist with their focus on grooming emerging talent.
At this stage, whether Dhoni will return to play next season remains uncertain, and the answer may not come anytime soon.
