The forthcoming edition of the Indian Premier League looks in jeopardy amid the rise in the coronavirus pandemic. The tournament was scheduled to commence from March 29 but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has postponed the league until April 15 amid the rise of COVID-19.

The pandemic has forced many cricketing events to shut including the IPL. The future of the tournament also looks gloomy with no signs of the situation getting better. anytime soon. Moreover, with the Government of India imposing visa restrictions on foreigners coming into the country, the participation of the foreign cricketers look gloomy.

However, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s captain David Warner has also confirmed his availability along with Mitchell McClenaghan, Tom Banton, and Ben Stokes. And now Steve Smith, who is slated to lead Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2020, has opened up on his participation recently.

Smith was confirmed RR’s full-time captain for the upcoming season. He played the first half of IPL 2019 under Ajinkya Rahane before taking over the captaincy. He, however, had to leave the camp midway to prepare for the 2019 World Cup.

“It’s obviously not looking likely (the IPL will go ahead) at the moment. I think there might be some meetings over the next few days to discuss what the go is with it all. I’m just trying to stay physically and mentally fit and fresh and, if it goes ahead at some point, then great,” he told Channel Nine.

But with the coronavirus spreading like a wildfire the future of IPL 2020 hangs by the wire. The BCCI is yet to take a final call and they are likely to meet on the second week of April.
