The middle order batsman from Worcestershire recreated history today after he hit six sixes in an over in a high scoring match between Yorkshire and Worcestershire in the NatWest T20 Blast at Headingley on Sunday.
Earlier David Willey had played a career best inning of 118 in just 55 balls which helped the Viking post a huge total of 233 for 6 in their quota of 20 over’s. In reply, the mighty left-hander Whiteley hit six sixes in the sixteenth over of the innings of a slow left-arm bowler Karl Carver.
The over fetched him 37 runs which include a wide. The first four balls were hit for six which was followed by a wide ball. The last two balls were also pitched up to the batsmen that were again dispatched to boundaries getting Whiteley into the record books. Carver gave away 47 runs in 2 over’s.
This astonishing hitting from the Rapid’s batsman took the team’s score to 173 for 4. But Whiteley perished for 65 runs in just 26 balls, hitting 8 mammoth sixes. Worcestershire finished at 196 for 7, thus ending 37 runs short.
“It was the right time in the game for me to go for it. It was all or nothing. Unfortunately for the bowler, it was a short boundary on the leg-side. I had the mentality that I was going to go for it before I got in. I hit the first out of the screws and needed to keep going for the team, not for that achievement. It”s something I never really thought I”d do in professional cricket,” Whiteley said after that short blast in the middle.
While Andrew Gale, the Yorkshire coach felt it was wrong for Bresnan, the captain of the team to bring Carver at that point of the game. While talking to media he said, “I felt for Karl, he”s got a good record in T20 cricket and he”ll bounce back.”
The Sheffield born hard-hitting batsman is the sixth batsman in the world to hit six sixes in an over.
