Harmanpreet Kaur joins MI squad for WPL 2023

The Indian T20 captain returned from South Africa after a heartbreaking loss in the semi-finals against Champions Australia, Harmanpreet Kaur joined Mumbai Indians franchise for the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League 2023 starting from 4 to 26 March. The bowling coach and mentor Jhulan Goswami and head coach Charlotte Edwards welcomed Harmanpreet Kaur with open arms.

Harmanpreet Kaur played a captain’s knock during the semi-finals with 52 off 34 balls and was run out as the bat stuck short of the crease. The Indian team suffered a narrow 5 runs loss.

The star batter was bought by the Mumbai Indians franchise for Rs 1.8 Crore in the historic auction and is likely to be a contender for the captaincy role. Kaur showed her fighting spirit during the T20 World semi-finals against Australia. She was looking good to take India home, but the unfortunate run-out led to India’s defeat.

During the presentation ceremony, Harmanpreet Kaur wore dark glasses to avoid tears. India finished 2nd behind England. It was a spirited effort by Kaur who smashed the Australian bowlers despite being ill.

Gujarat Giants will take on Mumbai Indians in the opening match of WPL to be played on 4 March at DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai.

The team looks strong with Nat Sciver for Rs 3.2 Crore, Amelia Kerr for 1 Crore, Pooja Vastrkar for 1.9 Crore, Yastika Bhatia for 1.5 Crore, Heather Graham 30 Lakhs, Issy Wong 30 Lakhs, Amanjot Kaur 50 Lakhs, Dhara Gujar 10 Lakhs, Saika Ishaque for 10 Lakhs, Chole Tryon for Rs 30 Lakhs, Humaira Kazi 10 Lakhs, Priyanka Bala 20 Lakhs, Sonam Yadav 10 Lakhs, Neelam Bisht 10 Lakhs, Jitumoni Kalita for 10 Lakhs.

Mumbai Indians franchise was the second most expensive team bought in the team bidding with Rs 912.99 Crore. It promises to be a tough fight as many top-quality T20I women players will take in the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League which will be a major boost for women’s cricket.

Harmanpreet Kaur would be looking to showcase her form in the Women’s Premier League tournament for Mumbai Indians.
