Chamari Athapaththu named as replacment for Lauren Bell in WPL 2024

The Sri Lankan hard-hitting batter Chamari Athapaththu has been named as a replacement for Lauren Bell by UP Warriorz for the upcoming Women’s Premier League starting on 23rd February. She was unsold in the WPL auction which stunned everybody. She has performed brilliantly for Sri Lanka in the shorter format.

Lauren Bell was retained by UP Warriorz’s side for WPL 2024. It is a massive boost for UP Warriorz’s side as they will look to do well in the upcoming season. They finished third last year in the points table and lost to Mumbai Indians badly in the eliminator.

She will be joining UP Warriorz for a base price of 30 Lakhs. She has a lot of experience in playing international cricket for Sri Lanka and featured for the Sydney Thunder side during the 2023 Women’s Big Bash League season.

“I look forward to giving my best to the team and working closely with head coach Jon Lewis and skipper Alyssa Healy and help my team lift the coveted title,” Chamari Athapaththu said. “The WPL is a very dynamic tournament, and the UP Warriorz is a strong squad.”

The second edition of the Women’s Premier League will be held from 17th Feb till 23rd March in two venues including M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru and Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi. It will be a huge boost for the UP Warriorz side as they comprise Allysa Healy, Deepti Sharma, Grace Harris, Kiran Navgire, Laxmi Yadav, Parshavi Chopra, Rajeshwari Gakywad, Yashari, Shweta Seharwat, Sophie Ecclestone, Tahila Mcgarth.

UP Warriorz bought the likes of England batter Dani Wyatt for Rs 30 Lakhs, Vrinda Dinesh for Rs 1.30 Crore, Saima Thakar for Rs 10 Lakh and Gouher Sultana for Rs 30 Lakhs.

Chamari Athapaththu performance for Sri Lanka in T20I format

Chamari Atthapatu had a dream performance with the bat and ball during the historic T20I series victory over England in England. She showed her class with 114 runs and grabbed 5 wickets.

She has shown tremendous promise with her aggressive batting which puts the bowlers under immense pressure. Chamari played a total of so far 122 T20I matches for Lanka with 2651 runs. She is the only Sri Lankan batter to score century in the shortest format. Her ability to hit big shots and make life tough for bowlers will be a major threat to other teams during the Women’s Premier League 2024.

UP Warriorz will begin their 2024 Women’s Premier League tournament against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Bengaluru on 24th Feb.
