WTC Final Team India were knocked over for another paltry score of 170 in the second innings by a fiery Kiwi pace attack. The seamers shared the spoils, with Southee ending up as the pick of the bowlers, snaring four wickets. The key wicket of skipper Virat Kohli however, was once again taken by Kyle Jamieson.
After surviving a late testing period on Day 5, Kohli found it tough to get going on the reserve day, especially with the guile of Southee and Jamieson in play. The Kiwi pacers still found movement in the air, and managed to completely unsettle Kohli.
The result was a sloppy lapse in concentration from Kohli. He stuck his bat out to an away-going delivery from Jamieson that was completely harmless. But the doubts that were sowed in his mind earlier came back to bite him, inducing an edge that emanated in his dismissal.
‘It was more like 2014’ – Nasser Hussain on Kohli’s dismissal
In the 2014 tour of England, a naive Virat Kohli was the victim of similar deliveries from his nemesis James Anderson. He had developed a faulty habit of hanging his bat out to deliveries that were landing on the fourth stump line. In swinging conditions such as England, this was a fatal mistake and it showed in his performances.

Virat Kohli found a swift way around it, however, ending up as the top-scorer in the 2018 tour of England. He amassed 593 runs in the 5-match Test series and hasn’t been dismissed by James Anderson ever since. Former England captain Nasser Hussain pointed out the similarities of his dismissal in the WTC Final to the ones in the 2014 tour.
“Little bit more like 2014 and not the one of 2018. That was the sort of line that James Anderson troubled him with in 2014. He left those last time around when he played in England,” he observed.
