Rohit appeared to stumble a little as he descended the steps at the Oval to reach the ground.

By chance, the stumble occurred as he was walking past a supporter holding up a poster that read, “Virat you will always be my captain”. India has now advanced to the World Tennis Championship final twice.

The team was led by Virat Kohli the previous time around at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton. Where they fell to New Zealand by an eight-wicket margin.

In the eight years from 2014 to 2022, Kohli led India in Test matches. After Kohli resigned from the position following India’s 2-1 series loss in South Africa at the beginning of last year.

However, due to injuries, Rohit has only played in eight Tests since that time.

In place of Ravichandran Ashwin, the world’s best Test bowler, India decided to field Ravindra Jadeja as their lone spinner.

In the opening hour of the World Test Championship final on Wednesday at the Oval. India’s top quicks caused Australia some stress. But they managed to reach lunch at 73-2.

With Steve Smith the new batter, a battered Marnus Labuschagne rode his luck to be 26 at the first break.

However, Labuschagne was defeated by Mohammed Shami off the first ball of the second over and did not last long in the second session.
