Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar reckons Team India has an edge over Australia in the World Test Championship final, which is all set to take place from June 7 to June 11 at The Oval in London. He also expressed his disagreement that Australia has an advantage as some of their players were resting ahead of the summit clash.

In a recent interview, former cricketer Ricky Ponting expressed that the Indian players will be tired after playing in the Indian Premier League. Apart from Cheteshwar Pujara, the rest of the Indian squad was part of the Indian Premier League. Meanwhile, Cheteshwar Pujara was playing County Cricket for Sussex.

Sunil Gavaskar expressed his disagreement with Ricky Ponting’s statement. He opined that playing in the Indian Premier League will be an advantage to the Indian players. Speaking to Sports Today, the former India captain said,

“I will give the edge to India. Not because I am an Indian. I don’t agree with the belief that the conditions are similar in Australia. In what way are they similar? Apart from Melbourne, where there are four seasons in a day, where else do you get this kind of condition.”

“I don’t see conditions being a special advantage to the Australians, neither the fact that some of their players were resting. Look, in a big match, you need to have miles under your feet. Most of the Indian players have done that. Pujara, who wasn’t part of the IPL, played County Cricket and was scoring centuries for fun. I do believe that the Indians definitely are in a very good position,” he added.

India are my favourite for World Test Championship final, but not by much: Sunil Gavaskar

Former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar further expressed that the Indian players are in good form. He pointed out that Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj are bowling in excellent rhythm. The legendary batter picked Team India as the favourites, but not by much. Speaking to Sports Today, Sunil Gavaskar said,

“The Indian batters are in very good form. The Indian bowlers, Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj have been in excellent rhythm, also Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, who will be my picks in the playing XI.”

Unless of course, I mean, in cricket things can go wrong but at the moment before the first ball is bowled, India are my favourite. Not by much, but they are the favourites,” he added.
