Yashasvi Jaiswal has become the fifth Indian opener to score 150 or more in a Test innings in Australia, achieving this feat on Day 3 of the opening Test at Optus Stadium in Perth. The other Indian batters to have reached this milestone are Ravi Shastri, Virender Sehwag, Sunil Gavaskar, and VVS Laxman.
Notably, Sehwag (2003 and 2008) and Gavaskar (1985 and 1986) have accomplished this twice. Jaiswal also became the second player, after South Africa’s Graeme Smith, to convert all his first four Test centuries into scores of 150 or more.
At 22 years and 330 days, Jaiswal became the fourth-youngest Indian to score a century in Australia, with Sachin Tendulkar remaining the youngest, having made a hundred at 18 years and 253 days in 1992.
Yashasvi Jaiswal is dominating the scene
Jaiswal was dismissed for a duck in the first innings after Mitchell Starc delivered a stunning ball to claim his wicket. However, the left-handed batter bounced back in the second innings, making the Australian bowlers work hard.
On Day 2, he reached fifty off 123 balls and then gradually accelerated his scoring. Jaiswal also set a new record by surpassing former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum’s tally for the most Test sixes in a calendar year.
At Stumps on Day 2, he was unbeaten on 90, and by early Day 3, he brought up his century off 205 balls. He formed a 201-run opening partnership with KL Rahul before Starc dismissed Rahul.
After a duck in the first innings, Jaiswal made a stunning comeback in the second, playing with patience and control. He scored his maiden Test century in Australia, joining cricket legends like Kohli, Tendulkar, Amarnath, and Gavaskar, who also scored centuries in Perth.
Additionally, Jaiswal broke Gautam Gambhir’s record for the most runs by an Indian left-handed batter in a calendar year. Since his debut in the West Indies last year, Jaiswal has made tremendous progress.
