Sourav Ganguly changed the landscape of Indian cricket completely after becoming India captain. His leadership skills were second to none as he led India to famous victories. The former Indian captain always believed in backing the youngsters of his side. On such young player was Yuvraj Singh, who made a name for himself under Sourav Ganguly.
Ganguly recently delivered an online lecture on Unacademy and at length talked about leadership. He gave an example of Rahul Dravid and Yuvraj Singh while talking about leadership. Both Dravid and Yuvraj were an integral part of the Indian side. But both were completely different as individuals and cricketers.
Sourav Ganguly talks about leadership duties
Dravid liked being calm on and off the field whereas Yuvraj was more flamboyant in the way he played his cricket. Ganguly pointed out that adaptability is the most important leadership quality one must-have. He explained that it is important to accept that everyone is different and you cannot expect anyone to be like someone else. The most important thing is to become a better version of yourself to become successful.
“Adaptability is one of the key leadership qualities. A leader should tap the natural talents of the team members. You cannot make Rahul Dravid act like Yuvraj or make Yuvraj be Rahul Dravid”.
“The greatest of the leaders make mistakes, but as long as the intentions are right, everything else will fall into place. You should learn from your own mistakes and leave them behind to be a better version of yourself. Don’t let your losses get you down, that’s a part of growing up. Learning from failures will lead you to success”, Ganguly said on Unacademy online lecture.
Sourav Ganguly is considered one of the greatest Indian leaders in cricket of all time. He went on to captain India in 149 ODIs and 49 Test matches with great success. Ganguly is currently the president of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
