“You Don’t Get World Cups On A Platter, India Desperate To Win” – Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma World Cup

Skipper Rohit Sharma expressed that Team India is desperate to end the ICC Trophy drought in the upcoming 2023 ODI World Cup. He added that they back themselves to lift their third ODI World Champions title this year. The mega-event is all set to take place in India in October-November 2023.

India last won an ICC Trophy in 2013, when they defeated England in the Champions Trophy. Their last ODI World Cup title came more than a decade ago, winning the 2011 ODI World Cup. Twelve years later, they will again be playing a 50-overs World Cup at home, hoping to end the ICC title drought.

Speaking at an event, Indian captain Rohit Sharma expressed that it’s a dream to win an ODI World Cup for the country. He said,

“Honestly, I have never won a (50 overs) World Cup, it’s a dream to win a World Cup and to be here fighting for it nothing makes me happier than that. You don’t get World Cups on a platter, you have to really work hard and that is what we have been doing all these years from 2011 till now we all are fighting for it.”

“Everyone is desperate to go and win because we know we have a good team. We are all good players, and that inner confidence and self-belief are there that they can do it. It’s not happened doesn’t mean that we take it lightly. When we lost the 2022 World Cup, I said we will keep fighting for the next World Cup,” he added.

The World Test Championship was coming and I said we will keep fighting for it, no matter what. Kabhi na kabhi to milega (we will win it at some point),” said Rohit Sharma.

Team India lost to Australia in the ICC World Test Championship 2023 final earlier this year. This was their second consecutive failure in the final of the Test championship. They lost to New Zealand in the inaugural cycle of the championship.

I have to score big runs and win games for the team: Rohit Sharma

Team India skipper Rohit Sharma expressed that his primary role in the team is as a batter. He added that he wants to score big runs for the team and win them matches in the upcoming 2023 ODI World Cup at home. Rohit also shared that captaincy is his secondary role in the team. He said,

“I need to do first as a batter. Captaincy is secondary… my role in the team is more as a batter. Obviously to captain well as well, (but) first of all, I have to score big runs and win games for the team.”

Team India will take on Australia in their opening match of the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup. The MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai will host the match on Sunday, October 8.
