Zaheer Khan, a former pace spearhead for India, is expected to join Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) as a mentor ahead of IPL 2025. The franchise is yet to make an official announcement. The vacant position of bowling coach could also be taken up by him as Morne Morkel has vacated it to join the coaching staff of Team India under Gautam Gambhir.

Over the years he has held several positions with different IPL franchises. From 2008-2017 he played in the cash-rich league for ten seasons including captaining Delhi Daredevils in his last edition. Then from 2018-2022 he became Mumbai Indians’ Director of Cricket and Head of Global Development.

ESPN Cricinfo had earlier reported that LSG are keen on giving this former Indian cricketer a bigger role such as scouting and player development. Ahead of 2024 edition, Super Giants had already roped in a star-studded coaching panel comprising Justin Langer as coach while Lance Klusener and Adam Voges were assistants to him.

LSG did not make it to the playoffs in IPL 2024

In the playoffs of their first two seasons, Lucknow Super Giants made a strong beginning after they made their debut by 2022. But this year they did not make it to the playoffs hence finished seventh (out of 10 teams) winning only seven games and losing as many. Before IPL 2025, the Super Giants are also expected to banish KL Rahul as soon as owner Sanjiv Goenka may declare anything regarding it soon.

This year after a 10-wicket loss against Sunrisers Hyderabad who almost chased 166 in 9.5 overs at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Rajiv Gandhi was seen having an animated conversation with Rahul.

This appointment comes when teams are gearing up for the mega auction as zeher’s appointment is also made during such time period. By early September, retention rules could be announced by IPL governing council.
