Australian all-rounder Matthew Short has a new IPL destination after the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) acquired him at his base price during the 2026 auction in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, December 16. Short last featured in the league in 2023, representing the Punjab Kings (PBKS), where he scored 117 runs in six matches at an average of 19.50 and a strike rate of 127.17, playing in the top order.
CSK were on the lookout for a spin-bowling all-rounder and a finisher in the auction. Their options narrowed after the experienced duo of Glenn Maxwell and Andre Russell were retained by other teams. While Liam Livingstone and Michael Bracewell were considered, CSK opted for a surprise pick, securing Matthew Short at his base price.
Here are 3 reasons Matthew Short could shine for CSK in IPL 2026:
#3 Can bowl useful overs against left-handed batters
With a spin lineup featuring Akeal Hosein, Noor Ahmad, Rahul Chahar, Shreyas Gopal, and Prashant Veer, CSK currently lack a finger spinner who can turn the ball away from left-handed batters. In such situations, Matt Short’s off-spin is an effective middle-over option. In his T20 career, he has an economy of 6.55 against left-handers, with a bowling average of 18.34.
His ability to bowl stump-to-stump and restrict the batters makes him a valuable defensive option, complementing bowlers like Noor Ahmad from the other end. In IPL 2025, CSK struggled against left-handers such as Devdutt Padikkal, Nitish Rana, and Sunil Narine, failing to contain them in the powerplay and middle overs, which significantly impacted their campaigns.
The team’s lack of a reliable Plan B against left-handers, especially during Ravichandran Ashwin’s poor form, was apparent early in the season. Matt Short could provide the perfect solution, offering control without disturbing CSK’s overall balance.
#2 A versatile backup who can also start when needed
With Matt Short, CSK have a player who can cover multiple roles, particularly with the bat. As an opener and top-order batter, the Australian is strong against pace and can make the most of the powerplay, providing solid backup for CSK’s top three if needed. Recently, he has also batted in the lower middle order, which adds further flexibility for CSK.
Acting as a finisher while contributing overs with his spin, Short effectively fills a key gap in the playing XI, serving as a backup for nearly every top-seven spot. He could even start in the lower middle order if CSK are confident with Dewald Brevis, Noor Ahmad, and either Akeal Hosein or Nathan Ellis as their overseas options, relying on their Indian pace attack.
In that setup, Short becomes the all-rounder providing balance in place of Jamie Overton.
#1 Adds strong competition to the team
A less-discussed issue for CSK last season was their weak bench strength compared to other teams. Their strategy of sticking with a trusted core, combined with limited backup options, often left them vulnerable and forced to endure setbacks before making changes.
Although CSK eventually released players like Ravichandran Ashwin, Devon Conway, Rahul Tripathi, Deepak Hooda, Vijay Shankar, and Jamie Overton, they lacked capable replacements on the bench who could make an immediate impact, ultimately having to depend on injury replacements.
With additions like Matt Short, CSK can strengthen both their playing XI and bench. Having versatile overseas options means switching players won’t drop quality, and including a modern T20 talent like Short can keep the first XI on their toes, a dynamic CSK could embrace in their new era.
