In a significant move, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have released veteran all-rounder Andre Russell ahead of the IPL 2026 auction. The franchise let go of nine players in total, while also trading Mayank Markande to Mumbai Indians (MI). Along with Russell, KKR parted ways with Venkatesh Iyer, Quinton de Kock, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, and Anrich Nortje, among others.

Russell featured in 139 games for KKR between 2014 and 2025, scoring 2,658 runs at a 175.09 strike rate and claiming 124 wickets, including a five-fer. With KKR unexpectedly releasing him, the 37-year-old is now set to enter the IPL 2026 auction. Here, we explore three teams that could look to secure Russell at the mini-auction.

#3 Chennai Super Kings

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) traded two major all-rounders — Ravindra Jadeja and Sanju Samson, to the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in exchange for wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson ahead of the IPL 2026 auction. After the retentions, CSK’s squad features all-round options like Shivam Dube and Jamie Overton, but they still lack a high-quality, impact all-rounder.

With their confirmed retentions and releases, CSK head into the auction with ₹43.40 crore and nine available slots, including four overseas spots. This gives them enough financial flexibility to target Andre Russell for an overseas position. His arrival could help fill the gap left by Jadeja and Curran.

A major reason CSK might aggressively pursue Russell is their history of backing experienced players. Age has never been a barrier for the franchise — MS Dhoni, at 44, continues to play, while seasoned stars like Faf du Plessis and Shane Watson enjoyed long stints with CSK. Russell fits that pattern perfectly.

#2 Kolkata Knight Riders

KKR may have released Andre Russell ahead of the IPL 2026 auction, but there remains a strong possibility that they could attempt to buy him back at a lower price. Russell was retained for ₹12 crore before the IPL 2025 auction, and because he was listed as Player 1 among the retentions last season, an additional ₹18 crore has been added to KKR’s purse this year.

The franchise will enter the IPL 2026 mini-auction with a massive ₹64.30 crore, the highest purse among all 10 teams. Based on their current retained squad, Sunil Narine is the only player who contributes heavily with both bat and ball, making Russell’s release somewhat surprising. Given their squad balance, KKR clearly need an all-rounder of his caliber.

However, with such a large purse, Kolkata can easily bid for Russell again at a price they find reasonable. It will be interesting to see how the franchise handles the Russell situation at the upcoming auction.

#1 Sunrisers Hyderabad

Apart from veteran pacer Mohammad Shami, who was traded to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have retained most of their core for IPL 2026. They were runners-up in 2024 but missed out on the playoffs in 2025. Their biggest strength remains their explosive top order, which is capable of dominating matches on its own.

Abhishek Sharma is in exceptional touch, and Travis Head continues to be one of the most dangerous T20 openers. Together, they form a destructive pair. However, SRH struggle in the middle and lower order. While Heinrich Klaasen has been consistent, players like Ishan Kishan and Aniket Verma have lacked reliability.

This makes Andre Russell an attractive option for Hyderabad. He could slot in as a finisher or even float in the batting lineup, with his bowling offering added value. With a healthy purse of ₹25.5 crore, SRH are well-positioned to target him at the auction.
