41-Year-Old Coach Returns, Hits Two Sixes And Takes A Wicket In BBL 2024-25

In an unexpected twist in the Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 season, the coach of a team came out of retirement to play in the ongoing tournament. Dan Christian, 41, coach of Sydney Thunder, rejoined the team for their match against Brisbane Heat on Monday (January 6).

Christian, the assistant coach of Sydney Thunder, was compelled to come out of retirement and take the field due to injuries and player unavailability affecting the team. With Cameron Bancroft and Daniel Sams both ruled out after a collision, Christian was drafted into the playing XI.

The all-rounder, who retired from professional cricket two years ago, made a stunning return to the field. First, the right-hander smashed an unbeaten 23 off 15 balls, hitting two sixes, including a 92-meter shot off Xavier Bartlett. The all-rounder then bowled four overs, conceding only 25 runs and taking the wicket of Nathan McSweeney.

Dan Christian says a return to the BBL was always a possibility

The 41-year-old said a return to the Big Bash or any other T20 franchise league was never entirely ruled out for him.

“I made the decision during the off season that a return to the BBL or any other T20 leagues was never entirely off the table for me,” Christian was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

He mentioned that his body feels in excellent condition and that he was ready for any opportunity that might arise. Christian also conveyed his thanks for the chance to play again and wished Bancroft and Sams a quick recovery.

“The body feels great, and I wanted to ensure I was prepared if an opportunity arose. The incident with Cam Bancroft and Dan Sams was extremely unfortunate, but I’m really grateful for the opportunity it’s presented. I wish them all the best with their recoveries and hope they’ll be back on the park soon,” he concluded.
