All you need to know about the ICC World Test Championship

The World Test championship is to bring Test cricket into the relevance and the larger audience comes together. The 2019 Ashes starting from 1st August will be a part of ICC Test championship. It will begin from 1st August 2019 and finish on June 2021. 

The ICC Test Championship will feature nine nations including India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, South Africa, West Indies, England, Australia, New Zealand, Bangladesh. This tournament will be played over two years. Each team will play six oppositions with three home and three Test matches. Each series will comprise two to five matches. 

The top teams in the league stage will qualify for the finals to be played in England in June 2021. All the matches consist of 5 days. 

Each series will carry a maximum of 120 points. For a 2 match Test series, the teams will be awarded 60 points for a win, 30 points for a tie, 20 points for a draw and 0 points for a defeat.

As for the 3 match Test series goes on, the team winning a Test match will be awarded 40 points, 20 points for a tie, 13.3 for a draw and 0 points for a defeat. For a 4 match Test series, the team will be awarded 30 points for a win, 15 points for a tie, 10 points for a draw and 0 points for a draw. 

For a long 5 match Test series, the team will be awarded 24 points for a win, 12 points for a tie, 8 points for a draw and 0 points for a defeat. 

Here we look at each team playing the ICC World Test championship 

 

1. India

The Indian Cricket team will play 18 Test matches in the 2-year cycle of ICC Test championship. They will play a total of 10 Test matches at home versus South Africa, Bangladesh, England. In away test matches, India will take on West Indies, New Zealand and Australia. 

 

2. New Zealand

New Zealand will play 7 Test matches away from home. They start their ICC Test championship against Sri Lanka in August 2019, Australia and Bangladesh. Their home test matches include India, West Indies and Pakistan. New Zealand will play a total of 14 Test matches in the 2-year cycle. They will not face England and South Africa

 

3. South Africa

The South African Cricket team will play a total of 16 Test matches in the 2-year cycle. They will take on England, Sri Lanka and Australia at home which comprises of 9 Test matches. In away Test matches, South Africa will face India, West Indies and Pakistan which comprise of 7 Test matches. In the 2-year cycle, they will not take on Bangladesh and New Zealand. 

 

4. England

England will play a total of 22 Test matches in the 2- year cycle of ICC Test Championship. At home, they are slated to play with Australia, West Indies and Pakistan which comprise of 11 Test matches. Away from home, England will play 11 Test matches against Sri Lanka, South Africa and India. Again they will not take on Bangladesh and New Zealand. 

 

5. Australia

Australia will play a total of 19 Test in the 2 year cycle. They will take on Pakistan, New Zealand and India at home which comprises of 9 Test matches. Away from home, Australia will face England, Bangladesh and South Africa which comprise of 10 Test matches. They will not Sri Lanka and West Indies in the 2-year cycle. 

 

6. Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka will play a total of only 13 Test matches in the 2 year-cycle of ICC Test championship. At home, they will face New Zealand, England and Bangladesh which comprise of 7 Test matches. In a way Test matches, Sri Lanka will take on Pakistan, South Africa and West Indies which comprise of 6 Test matches. They will face Australia and India 

 

7. Pakistan

Pakistan will also play a total of 13 Test matches in the 2 year-cycle of ICC Test championship. At home, they will face Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and South Africa which comprise of 6 Test matches. Away from home, Pakistan would take on Australia, England and New Zealand with a total of 7 Test matches. They would face India and West Indies. 

 

8. West Indies

West Indies are slated to play 15 Test matches in the 2-year cycle of ICC Test championship. At home, they will face India, South Africa and Sri Lanka which consist of 6 Test matches. Away from home, West Indies would take on England, New Zealand and Bangladesh comprising of 9 Test matches. In the 2 year-cycle, they will not face Australia and Pakistan. 

9. Bangladesh

Bangladesh will play a total of 14 Test matches in the 2-year cycle. At home, they will face Australia, New Zealand and West Indies which comprise of 7 Test matches. Away from home, they are slated to take on India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka consisting of 7 Test matches. They will not play England and South Africa in the 2 year period.
