The ongoing Duleep Trophy 2022 semi-final between West Zone and Central Zone witnessed a bizarre scene on Friday in which Venkatesh Iyer copped a head injury. The all-rounder had to walk out of the field after getting hit on the head by opposition bowler Chintan Gaja.

Iyer, who is playing for the Central Zone, went off to the mark with a six off Gaja. Next ball, the Indore batter played it right back to the bowler. Gaja picked the ball and threw it back at Venkatesh Iyer in anger, hitting the latter on the head who was down on the ground in visible pain.

According to an Indian Express report, the ambulance arrived in the middle of the field and the stretcher was also out, but Iyer decided to walk off the field. Venkatesh Iyer did come back later but couldn’t contribute much. With the help of a six and a couple of boundaries, he scored a 9-ball 14 before getting dismissed by Tanush Kotian in the 37th over.

“He is fine and back in the team hotel” – Venkatesh Iyer out of any danger

While it looked like a serious injury, Venkatesh Iyer has been declared fine and ruled out of any serious injury. He was sent to Kauvery hospital for a further checkup and now has rejoined the squad at the team’s hotel.

“I was hit below my ear. It was a shock initially but I am absolutely fine. I don’t know (if i will be able to play in the second innings), I have been kept under 24-hour observation. I will have to see how things go,” Iyer said.

It remains to be seen whether Venkatesh Iyer will return to the field for the second innings.
