The BCCI has reportedly sought Ashish Nehra to assume the role of Team India’s T20I coach post the 2023 ODI World Cup final defeat against Australia. The coaching scenario remains uncertain, given the impending end of Rahul Dravid’s contract.
As per an Indian Express report, Ashish Nehra declined the offer. Nehra achieved success as the head coach of the Gujarat Titans, leading them to the title in the 2022 season and securing the second spot in the 2023 edition.
With Nehra declining the T20I head coach position, the BCCI is reportedly keen on having Dravid continue as the head coach across all three formats. There are indications that the board has extended a contract offer to the former India captain to lead the team in all formats.
Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar believe that Rahul Dravid should continue as the head coach of Team India until the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Dravid remains uncertain about committing to a long-term coaching role due to the demanding schedule and workload. He prefers a position that involves less travel, such as the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru or a potential role in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Dravid is strongly connected to the open mentor role at the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) after Gautam Gambhir’s move to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
The BCCI is considering different choices as Dravid decides his future
Cricbuzz reported that the BCCI has prepared travel documents for Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, and their coaching staff for the upcoming South Africa tour. The report mentions that the BCCI is exploring options while Rahul Dravid considers his future.
There’s a possibility that the current coaching staff under VVS Laxman could handle the T20I squad for the series starting on December 10. If Dravid agrees to extend his role, he might take charge during the remaining three ODIs and two Tests in South Africa.
Laxman and his coaching staff receiving visas might also be for supervising the India ‘A’ team, scheduled to participate in three four-day matches in December 2023.
