Asia Cup Likely To Begin In Mid-September As ACC Eyes Smooth Start

There seems to be some progress in the Asia Cup 2025 situation. While nothing has been officially confirmed yet, there is now more hope that the tournament will take place as planned. This is a big change from the earlier uncertainty, which was mainly due to the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan.

According to sources, a final decision could be made next week. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is also planning to release the full schedule in the first week of July during its upcoming meeting. If everything goes well, the Asia Cup is expected to begin in the second week of September, most likely on September 10.

The tournament will be played in the T20 format, with India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and the UAE as the participating teams. Some early promotional work for the tournament has already started, showing that preparations are underway. More updates are expected once the ACC meets in July.

The UAE is still the top choice to host the Asia Cup 2025, although there are discussions about using a hybrid model for the tournament. While India is the official host this time, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) had earlier agreed that when it’s India or Pakistan’s turn to host, the tournament would be held in a neutral country due to political tensions.

Asia Cup Uncertain Amid Political Strain

The tournament faced uncertainty after a terror attack in Pahalgam in April. Tensions increased further in May when India launched Operation Sindoor against Pakistan. Following this, many voices in India began calling for a boycott of Pakistan in multi-nation events. India and Pakistan already don’t play bilateral series.

There were even talks that India’s possible boycott of Pakistan in ICC events would be discussed in the next ICC meeting. However, things now seem to be moving in a different direction. The ICC recently released the schedules for two major events: the Women’s ODI World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, and the Women’s T20 World Cup in England.

Interestingly, India and Pakistan are scheduled to face each other in both tournaments—on October 5 in Colombo and June 14 in Edgbaston. While neither the BCCI, ACC, nor ICC have publicly spoken about the situation, these developments suggest that India and Pakistan will likely continue to meet in ICC tournaments.

It’s also worth noting that matches between India and Pakistan are among the biggest money-makers in international cricket. While India and the BCCI don’t depend on the revenue from these games, global bodies like the ICC, ACC, and other member boards rely heavily on them for financial support.
