All-rounder Axar Patel is reportedly unlikely to retain his role as India’s vice-captain for the upcoming Asia Cup T20 tournament. Although he is expected to remain an important part of Team India’s T20I squad, new Test captain Shubman Gill is likely to be appointed as Suryakumar Yadav’s deputy for the Asia Cup.

Earlier this year, the BCCI selectors surprised many by naming Axar as the vice-captain of the T20I squad for the five-match series against England, recognizing his consistent performances in the format. Axar Patel also earned praise for his leadership as captain of Delhi Capitals (DC) in IPL 2025.

Gill is likely to be India’s vice-captain for the 2025 Asia Cup in the UAE, according to Revsportz. While captain Suryakumar Yadav is expected to be fit, Gill, who scored 754 runs in 10 innings on the recent England Test tour, will probably serve as his deputy.

The Men in Blue dominated England with a convincing 4-1 victory in the five-match home T20I series held in January-February. Leg-spinner Varun Chakravarthy earned the Player of the Series award after taking 14 wickets across the five matches.

On the batting front, Abhishek Sharma scored a total of 279 runs at an impressive average of 55.80, including a highest score of 135.

How Has Shubman Gill Performed In T20 Internationals For India?

Shubman Gill made his T20I debut for India against Sri Lanka at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium in January 2023. In 21 matches in this format, he has amassed 578 runs, averaging 30.42 with a strike rate of 139.27, including one century and three half-centuries.

He delivered a remarkable unbeaten 126 off 63 balls against New Zealand in Ahmedabad in February 2023, hitting 12 fours and seven sixes. The 25-year-old last played a T20I for India against Sri Lanka in Pallekele in July 2024.

Although Gill has featured in only a limited number of T20Is for India, he is a seasoned player in the IPL. Over 118 matches in the league, he has scored 3,866 runs at an average of 39.44 and a strike rate of 138.71, with four centuries and 26 half-centuries to his name.
