The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has denied claims that Shreyas Iyer will take over as India’s ODI captain in the near future. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that no discussions about this have taken place within the board. The 30-year-old batter’s profile has grown significantly in recent years, especially after securing his place in the ODI squad.
Iyer was instrumental in India’s 2025 Champions Trophy triumph, finishing as the team’s top scorer with 243 runs in five innings at an average of 48.60. He has also showcased his leadership abilities in the IPL, guiding both Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings to finals.
With Rohit Sharma already 38, his participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup remains uncertain. Speaking exclusively to The Hindustan Times on the matter, Saikia stated:
“That’s news to me. There have been no such discussions.”
Iyer’s exclusion from India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad came as a surprise, given his impressive IPL season. The Mumbai-born batter was acquired by Punjab Kings for ₹26.75 crore and lived up to expectations by scoring 604 runs in 17 games. His efforts played a key role in PBKS reaching the final for the first time in 11 years.
BCCI Considers Shubman Gill To Succeed Rohit Sharma In ODIs
The Hindustan Times reports that the BCCI is eyeing star batter Shubman Gill as Rohit Sharma’s successor, following his appointment as T20I vice-captain. The source added:
“He averages 59 in ODI cricket and is already the vice-captain of the team. There is no way someone who has recently been appointed Test captain, found some success and has age on his side should not take over leadership in ODI cricket, when the time comes.”
Shubman Gill displayed remarkable leadership in his debut Test series as captain, guiding the team to a 2-2 draw in the five-match series in England. The 25-year-old also emerged as the series’ top scorer, accumulating 754 runs.
