The International Cricket Council (ICC) explained the sudden omission of Indian stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from the latest ODI batting rankings. On Wednesday, August 20, both players were missing from the updated list, sparking widespread speculation among fans on social media about a possible retirement from the 50-over format.
Kohli and Rohit have already retired from T20Is and Tests, adding fuel to the rumors. However, Indian fans were relieved when both players’ names were reinstated in the ICC ODI rankings. The ICC confirmed to Wisden.com that the absence of Kohli and Rohit, along with other unexpected changes, was caused by a technical glitch.
“A number of issues in this week’s rankings are currently being investigated,” said the ICC to Wisden.com.
Rohit Sharma is currently ranked second among ODI batters in the ICC standings, while Virat Kohli sits at fourth. Both players last featured in the 2025 IPL season, turning out for Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), respectively.
Rohit could not add to his five IPL titles as MI lost in the second qualifier. Meanwhile, Kohli won his first IPL title when RCB defeated Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the final.
When Did Virat Kohli And Rohit Sharma Last Feature In An ODI?
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma last represented India in ODIs during the 2025 Champions Trophy in Dubai. Both players had outstanding tournaments, helping the Men in Blue secure their first ICC ODI title since 2013. Captain Rohit Sharma earned the Player of the Match award in the final against New Zealand, scoring 76 runs off 83 balls.
Kohli was consistent throughout the event, ending as the fifth-highest run-scorer with 218 runs at an average of 54.50 and a strike rate of 82.88. Having already retired from T20Is following India’s 2024 World Cup win, the duo announced their retirement from Test cricket in May, just before the recently concluded England tour.
India’s next ODI series is scheduled against Australia, with a three-match set beginning on October 19.
