BCCI Summons Ajit Agarkar After Test Whitewash: Reports

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly preparing to question Ajit Agarkar and the other members of the senior men’s selection panel after the team’s disastrous Test-series collapse against South Africa national cricket team. Critics point not only at the head coach but at the selection committee — led by Agarkar — for its role in shaping the playing XI.

This comes amid widespread dissatisfaction over the team’s performance at home, where several matches ended in heavy defeats, prompting questions over whether the right talent was being picked or given enough domestic exposure. The report highlights that the selectors, alongside the head coach, have “copped criticism from some corners.”

BCCI Signals a Conversation, Defends Remote Oversight

A senior BCCI official, speaking on the sidelines of the ongoing WPL auction, confirmed that the board intends to engage with the selectors to review what went wrong. “We will speak to the selectors too (on the Test debacle),” the official said.

Addressing concerns about the lack of in-person oversight of domestic games — an often-raised point by critics — the official added that even if Agarkar and his colleagues weren’t physically present at those matches, “every score comes on the app.” This was presented as a justification for their continued role in selection despite their limited presence on the ground.

Broader Fallout: Committee and Coaching Both in Question

In addition to Agarkar, the senior men’s selection committee includes SS Das, RP Singh, Ajay Ratra and Pragyan Ojha.

The pressure on the committee comes in the wake of consecutive poor performances by the national Test team. Many analysts point out that batting — especially in the top order — has repeatedly failed, with batsmen averaging under 30, and India rarely posting more than 300.

Meanwhile, the head coach Gautam Gambhir has also been under fire; many feel that under his tenure, the team has suffered more losses than wins, and that the slump coincides with the retirement of stalwarts, creating a vacuum that hasn’t been filled effectively.

Given the scale of the failure and public pressure, the forthcoming BCCI meeting with selectors carries significant weight. Whether it leads to changes in the selection panel or a reassessment of selection strategy remains to be seen.
