Ayush Mhatre

Young Mumbai batter Ayush Mhatre created history during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy clash against Vidarbha, surpassing a record held by Rohit Sharma for nearly two decades. At just 18 years and 135 days, Mhatre smashed a brilliant 49-ball century, becoming the youngest player to register a hundred across all three major formats: T20S, first-class cricket, and List A matches.

Rohit had set the previous mark at 19 years and 339 days, a milestone that had remained untouched for 19 years. Mhatre’s innings featured eight fours and eight sixes, guiding Mumbai to a dominant seven-wicket victory at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. His effortless stroke play and maturity under pressure highlighted why he is regarded as one of India’s most promising batting talents.

A Milestone Day, Century And Captaincy Announcement

The record-breaking knock coincided with another major announcement—Ayush Mhatre was confirmed as the captain of India’s U19 team for the upcoming Asia Cup. The same day he scripted history with the bat, he also received the responsibility of leading the national U19 squad for the second time, having previously captained the side on a multi-format tour of Australia earlier this year.

His selection reflects the selectors’ confidence not just in his batting prowess but also in his leadership qualities. The Asia Cup, set to be played in Dubai from December 12 to 21 in the 50-over format, will be a crucial platform for the young captain to showcase his tactical maturity. The semifinal matches are scheduled for December 19, followed by the final on December 21, giving Mhatre the chance to guide India toward yet another youth cricket title.

India’s U19 Asia Cup Path And Squad Composition

India will begin their Asia Cup campaign on December 12 against a yet-to-be-confirmed qualifier, followed by a high-voltage match against arch-rivals Pakistan on December 14. Their final group-stage clash is set for December 16 against another qualifier. The squad features a blend of dynamic batters, dependable all-rounders, and promising bowlers.

Alongside captain Ayush Mhatre, the team includes vice-captain Vihaan Malhotra, wicketkeepers Abhigyan Kundu and Harvansh Singh, and key talents like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Henil Patel, and Kishan Kumar Singh. The balanced composition aims to provide India with depth and flexibility across formats. As Mhatre continues to rise rapidly through the ranks with his record-breaking feats, his leadership in the Asia Cup will be closely watched, marking an important step in his journey toward senior-level cricket.
