BCCI’s September AGM To Elect New President And IPL Chairman

The BCCI’s Annual General Meeting, scheduled for the end of September, promises to be eventful as several key posts, including the president and IPL chairman, will be up for election. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal will step down for a three-year break; new candidates are being considered.

Meanwhile, Devajit Saikia will retain his position, having completed three years in total—two years and three months as joint secretary and nine months as secretary. Similarly, joint secretary Rohan Gauns Desai and Prabhtej Bhatia, both in their first year as office-bearers, will also continue in their respective roles.

For the IPL chairman’s position, the names of former Mumbai Cricket Association secretary Sanjay Naik and current BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla are being discussed, though no decision has been made yet. If Congress leader Shukla returns as IPL chairman, Bihar Cricket Association president and BJP leader Rakesh Tiwary could emerge as a candidate for the BCCI vice-presidency.

The AGM is likely to take place in the final week of September, with only a couple of vacancies expected this time, as the elections will be conducted under the board’s own rules. The implementation of the National Sports Governance Act is still some distance away, and BCCI does not plan to wait for it.

BCCI To Pick Former India Cricketer As Roger Binny’s Successor For President’s Post

Roger Binny, having turned 70 in July, is ineligible for re-election under the current constitution. The selection of the next BCCI president will be particularly significant, as decision-makers are keen on appointing a former India cricketer of stature to succeed Binny.

“There is a feeling among important stakeholders that a cricketer of distinction should always be elected as president. Sourav Ganguly was a decorated India skipper and Roger Binny India’s first World Cup winning hero. However, how many such cricketers of repute would be interested in taking up an honorary top job is a big question,” a veteran BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Rajeev Shukla’s case is an intriguing one. He has been serving as BCCI vice-president since 2020 and still has a year left under the Lodha Constitution. However, there’s a twist—if the National Sports Governance Act is implemented before the 2026 AGM, the Rajya Sabha MP could avoid the mandatory cooling-off period
