Bracewell Ends Fakhar Zaman's Show with Magical Delivery in Karachi

Pakistan’s Champions Trophy 2025 campaign got off to a rocky start as they faced a tough challenge against New Zealand at the National Stadium, Karachi. Fakhar Zaman, despite his valiant effort, couldn’t quite deliver the match-winning performance his team desperately needed. His struggles at the crease, compounded by an early injury, resulted in a brief innings of 24 off 41 balls before Michael Bracewell sent him back to the pavilion.

Pakistan’s Challenging Run Chase

Chasing a steep target of 321, Pakistan needed solid partnerships. However, the early loss of key batters put them in a tough spot. Fakhar Zaman, usually known for his aggressive approach, was forced into a more cautious role due to his injury, making it difficult for him to play his natural game.

Fakhar’s Brief Stay at the Crease

Once he arrived at the crease, Fakhar tried to break free from his struggles. He played a few aggressive strokes but failed to find consistent timing. Eventually, his attempt at a big slog-sweep off Michael Bracewell’s bowling led to his dismissal, as the ball crashed into his middle stump.

Fakhar Zaman’s Injury Setback

The match took an unfortunate turn early on when Fakhar Zaman sustained an injury while fielding. In the very first over of New Zealand’s innings, he dived to stop a boundary but landed awkwardly, clutching his lower back in visible discomfort. Forced to leave the field, Fakhar’s return later in the match saw him struggling to find rhythm.

Fakhar Zaman’s New ODI Milestone

Despite his struggles, Fakhar achieved a personal milestone in the match, surpassing 1,000 ODI runs at home. Coming into the game with 986 runs in Pakistan, he needed just 14 more to reach the landmark, which he managed before his dismissal. His overall ODI stats now include 1,632 runs in away matches and 1,009 runs at neutral venues.

New Zealand’s Dominance in the Match

New Zealand’s disciplined bowling attack ensured that Pakistan never gained momentum. Their strategy of targeting Fakhar Zaman paid off, and Bracewell’s clever variations made it difficult for Pakistan’s batters to settle. The Kiwi bowlers effectively controlled the game, keeping Pakistan’s required run rate in check.

Pakistan’s opening game revealed several weaknesses, particularly in handling pressure during chases. To remain competitive in the Champions Trophy, they must focus on building stronger top-order partnerships, improving their adaptability to match situations, and enhancing fitness and injury management.
