Pakistan Penalized in Champions Trophy Opener Against NZ; Here's the Reason

Pakistan faced a fielding penalty for failing to complete their overs in time during the Champions Trophy opener on Wednesday, February 19. As the defending champions and hosts, Pakistan elected to field first against New Zealand in Karachi but struggled to maintain the required over rate, leading to in-game sanctions.

Strong Start but Struggles with Over Rate

Pakistan had an impressive start with the ball as Abrar Ahmed dismissed Devon Conway, and Naseem Shah removed Kane Williamson for just one run—his first single-digit ODI score in six years. At the end of the first Powerplay, New Zealand was 48-2.

During the middle overs, spinners Abrar Ahmed, Khushdil Shah, and Salman Ali Agha extracted turn from the pitch, maintaining Pakistan’s dominance. However, issues with their over rate arose as Pakistan used a mix of pace and spin, and Haris Rauf’s repeated false starts slowed things down.

Efforts to Recover the Over Rate

From overs 41-44, Khushdil Shah and Abrar Ahmed bowled in tandem to speed up play, but they conceded multiple boundaries, causing additional delays. By the 48th over, Pakistan was still behind the required rate, resulting in a penalty that limited them to only four fielders outside the 30-yard circle instead of the usual five in the final 10 overs.

The innings lasted over four hours, ending at 6:11 PM local time after starting at 2:00 PM. Champions Trophy regulations mandate a minimum over rate of 14.28 overs per hour, meaning an ODI innings should be completed within three and a half hours. Falling short of this benchmark led to Pakistan’s penalty.

Potential Fines for Pakistan Players

In addition to the on-field restriction, Pakistan’s playing XI may face fines under ICC regulations. The ICC’s Code of Conduct states that every fielding team member can be fined five percent of their match fee per over short of the required rate, capped at 50 percent of their match fee. The exact number of overs Pakistan fell short has not yet been disclosed.

New Zealand’s Dominant Batting Performance

Despite Pakistan’s efforts, New Zealand capitalized on the situation, posting a formidable total of 320-5. Key contributions came from Will Young (107), Tom Latham (118*), and Glenn Phillips (61* off 39 balls), putting the pressure back on Pakistan in the tournament opener.
