Brook Scripts Rare Feat With Scores Of 99 And 0 In A Single Test Match

England’s Harry Brook was dismissed for a golden duck on Day 5 of the opening Test against India at Headingley, Leeds, on Tuesday, June 24. He came in to bat following Ben Duckett’s dismissal during England’s pursuit of 371 but was caught down the leg side off Shardul Thakur.

Attempting to glance a leg-stump half-volley, Brook only managed a faint edge to the wicketkeeper. This first-ball dismissal came after his impressive 99 in the first innings. Notably, Brook was nearly out for a duck in that innings too, but was reprieved when Jasprit Bumrah overstepped, giving him a lifeline.

However, he eventually fell one run short of a century, getting out to Prasidh Krishna while attempting a hook shot that landed in the hands of deep backward square leg. With these scores, Brook has become just the fifth player in Test cricket history to record 99 and 0 in the same match.

The first cricketer to do so was India’s Pankaj Roy, who scored a duck in the first innings against Australia in Delhi in 1959, followed by a 99 in the second, narrowly missing a well-earned century. In addition to Harry Brook and Pankaj Roy, three other players who have recorded scores of 99 and 0 in the same Test match are from Pakistan.

Mushtaq Mohammad achieved this against England in Karachi in 1973. Years later, Misbah-ul-Haq scored 99 and a duck versus the West Indies in Bridgetown in 2017. More recently, former skipper Babar Azam registered scores of 0 and 99 against Australia in Abu Dhabi in 2018.

Harry Brook Shines Bright In Early Test Career

England batter Harry Brook has enjoyed a stellar start to his Test career. Since making his debut in September 2022, the right-hander has quickly become an integral part of the national team. In just 26 Test matches, the 26-year-old has amassed 2,438 runs at an impressive average of 58.04, including eight centuries and 12 half-centuries.

Remarkably, half of his Test hundreds have come against Pakistan, with his highest score being a monumental 317 in Multan in October 2024. In addition, the highly regarded England batter has recorded three centuries against New Zealand and one against the West Indies.
