In the latest match of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) faced off against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Sunday, April 22nd, marking RCB’s 8th game. Unfortunately, this encounter resulted in RCB’s seventh defeat of the season. RCB’s journey in IPL 2024 has been exceptionally tough, managing only one victory thus far.
Their net run rate stands at a disheartening -1.046, leaving them with just 2 points and firmly positioned at the bottom of the IPL 2024 points table, currently occupying the 10th position.
Although RCB hasn’t been mathematically eliminated from contention for the IPL 2024 Playoffs, their path forward has become significantly more challenging considering their current standings. Traditionally in IPL, teams typically needed to secure at least 7 wins to ensure a playoff berth. However, IPL 2024 is a 10-team tournament, necessitating a minimum of eight wins in the league stage for any team to advance to the next phase.
It’s do-or-die time for RCB to stay in the mega-event
With only six matches remaining for RCB and a current record of 1 win and 7 defeats, even winning all remaining matches would not guarantee them a playoff berth. Given their current performance, achieving such a streak seems unlikely. Moreover, historically, no team has ever reached the playoffs in IPL by winning just six matches.
Every team that has made it to the playoffs has secured at least 7 victories during the league stage. From IPL 2018 to 2021, the fourth team to qualify for the playoffs typically had 14 points. However, since the introduction of two new teams in 2022, the requirement has increased to 16 points.
Even if RCB were to win all their remaining matches and end up with 14 points, they would still fall short of qualifying for the IPL playoffs under the current format. Thus, despite their efforts, RCB’s chances of advancing to the IPL 2024 playoffs appear almost impossible given the current circumstances.
