Sri Lankan cricketer Charith Asalanka has achieved a significant career landmark by completing 2,500 runs in One Day Internationals (ODIs). He reached this milestone during the third and final ODI against Bangladesh at the Pallekele International Stadium.
It was his 14th run in the match that marked the achievement, and remarkably, he got there in just 68 innings. This rapid accumulation of runs highlights Asalanka’s consistency and skill in the middle order, especially considering the challenging role he plays at number five.
Among Sri Lanka’s Most Consistent ODI Performers
Since making his ODI debut, Asalanka has established himself as a key part of Sri Lanka’s batting lineup. In 76 ODI appearances, he has scored over 2,500 runs at an impressive average of more than 43. Notably, he became the second-fastest Sri Lankan to reach 2,000 ODI runs, achieving the feat in 56 innings, just behind Pathum Nissanka, who did it in 52 innings.
What makes Asalanka’s accomplishment more impressive is that he doesn’t open the innings, often coming in during high-pressure situations. His ability to stabilize the innings and accelerate when needed has made him an invaluable asset to the Sri Lankan team.
Home Dominance and Impressive Numbers
Asalanka’s batting stats reflect his consistency and match-winning abilities. He has scored five centuries and 15 fifties in his ODI career, with a top score of 127. He stands out as the only Sri Lankan with over 2,000 ODI runs who maintains an average above 42 and a strike rate exceeding 91. His home performances have been particularly dominant, with over 1,780 runs scored at an average of more than 55.
While his overseas record is relatively modest—with only 211 runs at an average of 15.07—he has fared better at neutral venues, scoring 510 runs at an average of 42.50. Against Bangladesh specifically, Asalanka has been in exceptional form, having scored more than 450 runs in just nine matches at an average above 60, including a century in the opening match of the series.
