5 Current IPL Coaches Who Coached Other Franchises In The Past

We often talk about the players in the Indian Premier League, obviously because some players have evolved drastically that they’ve gone on to make headlines for their national side. But in between all of this, we fail to talk about the Coaches in the IPL who have been a strong support system for the players. Since more than the captain, its the coach who backs a player for a specific role in the side.

In past, we’ve seen Daniel Vettori and Virat Kohli share a great bond in the RCB camp. Since Virat played under Daniel for a brief period before taking over as RCB’s full-time captain. Further, we witnessed Vettori coach the Virat Kohli led RCB side for a couple of seasons.

Then there have been the duos of MS Dhoni-Stephen Fleming for CSK and Rohit Sharma-Mahela Jayawardene for MI who are active even now for their franchises.

But there are also some coaches who have coached multiple IPL teams in the past which is why today we look at current IPL coaches who have coached different franchises in the past.

Let’s take a look at current IPL Coaches who have coached other franchises in the past:

Anil Kumble

The Karnataka-born leg spinner had a distinguished career as a player leading the RCB side. It was under his captaincy, Bangalore reached the final of the 2009 IPL where Deccan Chargers (now known as Sunrisers Hyderabad) emerged champions.

Before the start of the 2011 season, Kumble announced his retirement from the IPL. After quitting the league as a player, RCB appointed him as the chief mentor of the team for 2 years. Following which Kumble resigned from the post in 2013 and then took up a similar role with the Mumbai Indians franchise for another 2 years which lasted until 2015.

Ahead of the 2020 IPL auction, Kumble was appointed as Kings XI Punjab’s Head Coach where he’ll be in partnership with newly appointed captain KL Rahul.

Ricky Ponting

The 2 time World Cup-winning captain started off his IPL career with the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2008. Unable to adapt to the T20 format, Ponting then only featured for the Mumbai Indians franchise in 2013.

He stepped down midway allowing Rohit Sharma to take over as Mumbai’s captain. The following year Mumbai Indians went on to win the IPL for the very first time.

Ponting then coached the Mumbai Indians side from 2014 to 2016 until he decided to resign. Later in 2018, Ponting was appointed as the head coach of Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and has been part of the franchise ever since.

The gun player has been the heart of Delhi and ever since he took over the job, the side has performed a lot better in the tournament.

Mike Hesson

The former New Zealand head coach was appointed as Kings XI Punjab Head Coach for the 2019 IPL season. Mike Hesson, who witnessed tremendous success with the Kiwis, failed to replicate with the Punjab franchise. After spending a season with the Punjab based franchise, Mike resigned from the post in order to apply for the India head coach job.

After the job went in favour of Ravi Shastri, Mike was open for the coaching role again. This is when he was acquired as Head of Cricket Operations of the RCB franchise for the 2020 IPL season. He along with head coach Simon Katich will have to work tirelessly as Bangalore begin their hunt for maiden trophy.

Simon Katich

Simon Katich was appointed as Kolkata Knight Riders assistant coach in 2015. He served as Jacques Kallis deputy for 4 years until Kolkata parted ways with both of them. During their time, the former Aussie batsman played an essential role and the franchise from the eastern parts of India reached the pinnacle.

Ahead of the 2020 season, Katich replaced Gary Kirsten as RCB‘s head coach where he’ll be working under Mike Hesson who is the director of cricket operations of the franchise. He will have a tough job at hand as the Virat Kohli-led side is aiming their maiden IPL trophy.

Jonty Rhodes

Jonty Rhodes was associated with the Mumbai Indians since the 2009 season as their fielding coach. During his tenure with the defending champions, he made Mumbai a gun fielding side. But in 2017, he resigned from the post owing to personal reasons ending his nine-year association with the franchise.

Now, ahead of the 2020 IPL season, he was appointed as Kings XI Punjab’s fielding coach. He will partner with head coach Anil Kumble for the period. Looking at the visuals coming out from the training, Rhodes is having a good time. Recently, he also took some fielding drills and gave glimpses of his glorious past.
