CWC19: Last 5 India Versus West Indies World Cup Encounters

India and West Indies will take on each other at Old Trafford, Manchester on 27th June 2019. The Indian Cricket would be looking to dominate the West Indies team after surviving a scare in the previous match against Afghanistan. 

On the other hand, West Indies lost a close fought match to New Zealand by just 5 runs. India and West Indies played their first World Cup match on 9th June 1979. Since then they have played 8 matches with India winning 5 matches while West Indies with 3 wins.

In the previous 5 encounters, India has won 4 matches while West Indies won only 1. During the 1983 World Cup, India and West Indies met thrice in the tournament. 

In ongoing World Cup, India is currently 3rd in the points while West Indies are on the verge of elimination.

India versus West Indies, 1983 Final

India met West Indies in the finals of 1983 Prudential Cup played on 25th June at the iconic Lords Cricket Ground, London. 

West Indies captain Clive Lloyd won the toss and decided to field first.  On a grassy pitch, the Indian batting line up failed. Kris Srikanth was the top scorer with 38, Mohinder Amarnath 26, Sandeep Patil 27 helped India post 183 in 54.4 overs.

While defending the target of 184 runs to win, it was an exceptional bowling display by the Indian bowlers who kept a tight leash on West Indies batsmen. Madan Lal and Mohinder Amarnath picked 3 wickets each to help India register a historic win over the mighty West Indies by 43 runs which changed the face of Indian Cricket. India bowled out West Indies for 140 in 52 overs. 

India versus West Indies, 1992 World Cup Round Robin

India took on West Indies in 1992 World Cup Round Robin format played on 10th March at Basin Reserve, Wellington. This is the only time that West Indies defeated India in last 5 matches in World Cup history. 

Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin won the toss and decided to bat first. Kris Srikanth and Ajay Jadeja had a great start adding 56 runs for the opening wicket. Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin was the top scorer with 61 while Sanjay Manjekar remained not out on 27. West Indies bowled out India for 197 in 49.4 overs. 

Chasing the revised target of 195 runs to win in 46 overs, Desmond Haynes and Brian Lara got the team off to a steady start adding 57 runs for opening wicket. India reduced West Indies to 112 for 5 before Karl Arthurton added unbeaten 83 runs for 6th wicket to give West Indies 5 wicket win with 34 balls to spare. For India, Javagal Srinath took 2 wickets while Kapil Dev, Manoj Prabhakar and Raju took 1 wicket each. 

India versus West Indies, 1996 World Cup Group Stage

In a Group A match played at Captain Roop Singh Stadium, Gwalior on 21st February 1996, India defeated West Indies by 5 wickets.

In this match, West Indies captain Richie Richardson won the toss and decided to bat first. It was a brilliant bowling performance by the Indian bowlers dismissing West Indies for 173 in 50 overs. West Indies captain Richie Richardson was top scorer with 47, Shivnarine Chanderpaul 38, Roger Harper 23. For India, Anil Kumble and Manoj Prabhakar took 3 wickets each while Javagal Srinath took 2 wickets. 

Chasing down the target of 174 runs to win, Sachin Tendulkar was the top scorer with 70. Despite losing Ajay Jadeja early, the Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin, Vinod Kambli and Nayan Mongia helped India register 5 wicket win with 62 balls to spare. 

India versus West Indies, World Cup 2011 Group Stage

India and West Indies met each other in a Group B match of the 2011 World Cup match played at M Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on 20th March. Indian captain MS Dhoni won the toss and decided to bat first. 

It was not a great start for the Indian Cricket team as they lost 2 early wickets of Sachin Tendulkar and Gambhir. Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh added 122 runs for the 3rd wicket. Yuvraj Singh was the top scorer with 113. India was bowled out for 268 in 49.1 overs. 

Defending the target of 269 runs to win, the Indian spinners wreaked havoc among the West Indies batsmen. Zaheer Khan took 3 wickets while Yuvraj Singh and Ravichandran Ashwin took 2 wickets each which helped India bowl out West Indies for 188 in 43 overs. India won the match by a massive 80 runs margin. 

India versus West Indies, World Cup 2015, Group Stage

In 2015 edition of World Cup played in Australia and New Zealand, India took on West Indies played in Group B match at WACA, Perth on 6th March 2015. 

West Indies captain Jason Holder won the toss and decided to bat first. It was a brilliant bowling performance by the Indian team dismissing West Indies for 182 in 44.2 overs. Jason Holder was the top scorer with 57. For India, Mohammed Shami took 3 wickets while Umesh Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja took 2 wickets, Ravichandran Ashwin and Mohit Sharma took 1 each.

Chasing down the target of 183 runs to win, India were struggling at 78 for 4. Virat Kohli scored 33, Raina 22. MS Dhoni led from the front remaining not out on 45. India won the match by 4 wickets with 65 balls to spare.
