Delhi Capitals To Part Ways With Ricky Ponting

Delhi Capitals have chose to split with head coach Ricky Ponting following his seven-year contract, sources familiar with the situation indicated. The franchise decided not to continue his contract because of their failure to triumph the IPL championship, despite Ponting’s leadership since 2019.

In spite of achieving their maiden IPL final in 2021 beneath Ponting, Delhi Capitals’ subsequent execution have failed of expected standards.

“The top brass of Delhi Capitals have intimated Ricky that they aren’t happy that the team didn’t win a championship in seven years and they are trying to look at rejigging the support staff. He won’t be continuing next year,” a source close to DC management told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Ponting’s exit from Delhi Capitals (DC) as head coach has prompted the franchise to face significant decisions. The team management aimed for Ponting to be more involved in the auction and team-building processes, rather than joining shortly before the IPL season begins.

DC now faces the decision of either appointing a new head coach or potentially assigning additional responsibilities to Team Director Sourav Ganguly. Praveen Amre, the dedicated assistant coach, is expected to maintain his current role.

The co-owners of DC, JSW and GMR group, are planning a meeting either by the end of this month or early next month to discuss their future course of action. Player retention is another crucial topic on the agenda.

With the possibility of retaining only four players, DC will need to choose between Australia’s Jake Fraser-McGurk and South Africa’s Tristan Stubbs for the single remaining overseas slot.

When it comes to the Indian core, the decisions appear clear-cut: captain Rishabh Pant, all-rounder Axar Patel, and wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav, provided they agree to be retained.

However, considering the mega auction slated for 2025, there is a chance that some key players eligible for retention from various franchises might opt to enter the auction again to gauge their actual market worth.
