Tim Southee, one of New Zealand’s most accomplished fast bowlers, retired from Test cricket in December 2024 after England’s 2-1 series win in New Zealand. Over his 16-year career, he took 776 international wickets, a national record. Known for his swing bowling and tactical intelligence, Southee has now transitioned into coaching, bringing his leadership and experience to the England setup.
The ECB welcomed Southee’s addition, emphasizing his “vast experience in various global conditions” and his ability to offer “valuable insight” across all formats. ECB stated, “With his vast experience of playing in a wide range of conditions around the world and across all formats, [Southee] brings valuable insight and knowledge to the players.”

Breakdown of Southee’s Short-Term Contract
Tim Southee’s short-term contract with England begins with the one-off Test against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge on May 22. He will then be part of the white-ball series against West Indies and the five-Test series against India in June and July. His stint ends on August 4 at The Oval, after which he will return to play for Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred. Southee’s expertise in seam positioning, reverse swing, and reading batsmen is expected to strengthen England’s bowling attack, particularly against India.
