Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar shared his thoughts on Shubman Gill’s leadership during the recently concluded Test series against England. India managed to level the five-match series 2-2 after securing a dramatic six-run victory at The Oval. This series marked Gill’s debut as Test captain, following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the format ahead of the England tour.
Tendulkar emphasized that successful captaincy often hinges on how disciplined and consistent the bowlers are with their execution. He praised Gill for maintaining a calm and composed demeanour, especially during challenging moments for the bowling unit.
The batting icon also suggested that at times, playing defensively or adopting a “boring” style could be an effective tactic for India against England.
“He still looked calm and composed. Mainly against England, you can afford to play boring cricket because if you slow down the game, they will put the foot on the accelerator harder and that can work in the fielding side’s favor. I felt Gill controlled the team well,” he said on his YouTube channel.
Sachin Tendulkar acknowledged that there were still areas where India could improve, but he felt it was a commendable overall performance, especially since it was Shubman Gill’s debut series as captain.
“There were areas where things could have been different. But this was his first series and possibly against the most attacking side in the world. All in all, a great result. Things could have been different, but there are no ifs and buts in cricket,” he added.
Shubman Gill Earns High Praise From Sachin Tendulkar
Sachin Tendulkar praised Shubman Gill for his consistent performances across the series, noting that he appeared calm, composed, and well-structured at the crease. Tendulkar expressed admiration for Gill’s mindset and overall approach to the game.
“When it comes to quality batting, you need to have a clear head and a game plan. He was extremely consistent as far as his thought process was concerned. It reflects on your footwork. His body was responding brilliantly, he looked so much in control,” he said.
“The most important thing I noticed was the respect to a good ball where the tendency sometimes is to push the ball. He was able to consistently defend well. The ability to leave was also good. Overall, the shot selection was precise,” he added.
