Shubman Gill, leading India for the first time in a Test series, revealed that the most important lesson he learned was to never give up, regardless of the situation. The 25-year-old stepped into the role after Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket in May 2025. Gill had an outstanding series with the bat, amassing 754 runs across 10 innings at an impressive average of 75.40.
He shattered multiple records during the series and stood out as India’s most consistent and impactful batter throughout the five Tests.
“That we never give up,” Gill told Michael Atherton in the post-match presentation on Day 5 at The Oval (via Cricbuzz).
The Indian skipper also shared his thoughts on his batting display during the series, expressing contentment over reaching his personal target of emerging as the leading run-scorer. He registered four hundreds in the five-match series, including a century in each innings of the second Test at Edgbaston.
“Feels very rewarding, there were certain things I wanted to work on as a batter and it was a goal to end as the best batter of this series, glad to get that goal,” he said.
Gill shares experience of captaining Siraj in Tests
With Jasprit Bumrah unavailable, Mohammed Siraj stepped up as the spearhead of India’s bowling unit. He delivered a match-winning performance in the final Test at The Oval, claiming nine wickets and earning the Player of the Match award. Shubman Gill described having someone like Siraj in the lineup as a dream for any captain.
Speaking to Cricbuzz, the 25-year-old remarked:
“He is a captain’s dream, every ball, every spell he bowled he came all out and gave it everything for the team.”
Mohammed Siraj ended the series as the leading wicket-taker, claiming 23 wickets across five Tests at an average of 32.43. He finished well ahead of Josh Tongue, who took 19 wickets in just three matches to become the second-highest wicket-taker.
