ENGvIRE: Tim Murtagh Becomes The First Irishman To Bag a 5 Wicket Haul in Test Cricket

The right-arm medium pacer Tim Murtagh became the first Irishman to pick up five wickets in Test matches on the first day of the one-off Test match against England that began today. Ireland playing their 3rd Test match since their debut in 2018, the bowling was superb on a green pitch which suited the fast bowlers.

England captain Joe Root won the toss and decided to bat first. Murtagh got the early breakthrough dismissing debutant Jason Roy for 5. Joe Denly and Rory Burns struggled against the Ireland bowlers. Murtagh struck again dismissing the other opener Rory Burns for 6. When the score was at 42 for 4, Tim Murtagh bowled a beauty to dismiss Jonny Bairstow, Chris Woakes and Moeen Ali in quick succession to leave the hosts in tatters at 43 for 7.

It was a brilliant bowling performance by the Irish bowlers who bowled hosts for a paltry total of 85 in 23.4 overs. Tim Murtagh finished with amazing figures of 5 for 13 in 9 overs including 2 maidens. The debutant Adair took 3 for 32 while Boyd Rankin finished with 2 for 5 in 3 overs.

Playing their third Test match, Ireland bowlers produced a sensational display of bowling pitching the ball right up and swinging away. The right-arm medium pacer Tim Murtagh has the experience of playing 228 First-Class matches for Middlesex.

Before this match, Tim Murtagh took 7 wickets in 2 matches with the best figures of 4/45 in an innings. The right-arm medium pacer was simply sensational during the first day at the iconic Lords Cricket Ground.

With his maiden 5 wicket haul in Test cricket, Tim Murtagh has registered his name on the honours board at Lords. Ireland lost their debut Test match against Pakistan in 2018 by 5 wickets. In 2019, Ireland played their 2nd Test match against Afghanistan at Dehradun and lost that match by 7 wickets.
