Explained: Why BCCI Might Choose Shubman Gill as the New Test Captain?

Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill

With Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket and speculation growing about Virat Kohli’s future, India’s red-ball team is undergoing a major transformation. Amid this shift, Shubman Gill is set to take charge as the next Test captain. Equally crucial is the selection of his deputy, and Rishabh Pant emerges as the natural choice.

Why is Shubman Gill the Best Choice?

Shubman Gill’s journey from being the Player of the Tournament in the 2018 U-19 World Cup to leading the Indian Test side has been nothing short of spectacular. The 25-year-old has impressed everyone with his composure, technique, and hunger for runs. Having captained sides in junior cricket and displayed a calm head on his shoulders, Gill’s elevation seems timely as India looks to build a team for the future.

Rishabh Pant – A Natural Deputy

Rishabh Pant stands among the most impactful players in Indian cricket. He thrives in challenging conditions, boasting a Test average of over 42 and centuries in Australia, England, and South Africa, along with multiple scores in the 90s. His ability to shift the momentum of a match makes him a game-changer and a strong contender for the vice-captaincy. As a wicketkeeper, he remains at the heart of the action, seamlessly connecting the bowlers with the captain.

Bumrah and KL Rahul – A Key Consideration

Selectors considered Jasprit Bumrah for a leadership role, but his inconsistent fitness became a major obstacle. His workload management, frequent injuries, and the likelihood of missing long tours made him an unreliable choice for captaincy. A BCCI source summed it up, stating, “If Bumrah isn’t the captain, there’s no point in offering him the vice-captaincy.”

KL Rahul was considered for the captain’s role, but at 33 and with patchy form in Tests, the selectors leaned towards a younger option. Still, Rahul is expected to be a key part of the Test squad—most likely opening the innings alongside Jaiswal. His ability to adapt and guide youngsters will still be vital.

Kohli Again for Captaincy?

Virat Kohli has been one of the defining figures of modern-era Test cricket, but recent reports indicate that he is considering stepping away from red-ball cricket. Although he has not officially announced his decision, insiders reveal that the BCCI is making every effort to persuade him to stay.

Surprisingly, selectors discussed the possibility of reinstating Kohli as captain temporarily to help Shubman Gill ease into the role. However, his recent decline in form and India’s focus on long-term planning led them to drop the idea. At 35, the priority has shifted toward grooming a younger leader for the future.

“It is true that selectors did think about having Kohli as India skipper for the England series. This would have given Gill some time to grow into leadership role but at 25-and-a-half years of age, he is yet to hit his peak. Due to Bumrah’s fitness issues, Gill looks like the obvious choice for Ajit Agarkar’s committee,” a BCCI source privy to development said.

India’s Future Test Leadership Core

With Gill as captain and Pant likely to be vice-captain, India seems to be forming a solid leadership duo. Both are young, aggressive, and confident. This setup allows India to plan for the next five to seven years. Gill and Pant will likely rely on the experience of players like Jadeja and Ashwin, while mentoring the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan. This blend could be crucial as India navigates tough away series and a new era in Test cricket.
